A Framework for Equitable Instruction in Movement Disciplines
Every student is provided meaningful teaching support, such that if they decide not to pursue the art form, it is not because the teaching methods were inadequate or the environment didn't feel safe.
The Fair Chance Framework recognizes the teacher's responsibility to provide the support and pathways students need for a real chance to succeed in the art form, such that every student's outcome is determined by their genuine interest and effort, not by failure of the methods themselves. Teachers seek solutions to ensure that each student is supported, communicates in a way that encourages internally referenced progress, not comparison, and refers the student out if they can't meet their needs.

These principles apply to any group movement class, and are especially critical in high-load disciplines where the stakes are higher. A group class is not a private lesson. But it is also not a class where certain students are dismissed or sidelined because their needs are inconvenient.
The teacher is responsible for providing opportunities for each student to succeed, not just the students that catch on quickly. The critical question is: does the teacher have the resources to be present with and steadily progress every level of student in the room? Ensure appropriate class structure, progression systems, and provide an assistant teacher if needed, such that every student feels genuinely seen and supported, whether or not they all achieved the same skills that day. The scenario avoided: certain students are left hanging or sidelined because their needs are harder to meet. If the teacher/program cannot meet a student's needs in that format, communicate clearly that there is a design mismatch, not an inherent problem with the student.
This principle aims to decrease the progress gap between the most naturally gifted movers and the students with limited athletic background, injury histories, neurodivergence, body type, physiological conditions, or any other factors that affect learning. Research confirms that prior motor competence significantly influences new skill acquisition, i.e., students with athletic backgrounds demonstrate measurably faster initial progress than those without.1,2 That has to be accounted for through class leveling, bringing in an assistant teacher, or offering progressions/modifications.3 The class structure and teaching methods define whether the gap between student progress widens or narrows.
Technical instruction is only part of what determines whether a student succeeds. The environment, including how students are greeted, whether they feel they belong, whether the space feels psychologically and emotionally safe, is crucial for learning success and risk reduction. A class that is technically excellent but socially uneasy, or intelligently designed but psychologically unsafe, will impede learning outcomes and discourage students from returning, especially those already questioning whether they belong.
Students who feel psychologically safe are more likely to ask key questions, try skills, air safety concerns, and communicate pain. The learning environment is not seen as separate from good pedagogy, but integral to it.4
Beginners in any learning scenario, but especially high-load disciplines, need significant support, guidance, and supervision. This affects safety and learning outcomes. A single teacher managing a mixed-level class cannot adequately hold the room and attend to a new student's high-load learning needs at the same time. The Fair Chance Framework proposes a class structure where the teacher can attend to each student without feeling like their attention is spread thin.
The minimum viable solution is a second person, a volunteer, a teacher in training, even a teenager with basic training in presence and support, whose only job is to be present with the beginners. Not to mastermind the lesson, but to provide basic instruction, be present, and ensure beginners feel seen and welcome. The more trained that person is the better, but presence alone improves safety and learning outcomes. Aerial places unusually high simultaneous demands on attention, perception, motor planning, working memory, threat appraisal, physical effort, and spatial orientation. When attentional and physical load is high, a calm and present person in the learner's immediate environment reduces the burden on working memory, supports psychological safety, and preserves the learner's capacity to perceive, attempt, and evaluate movement successfully.6
The rate of skill acquisition is an incomplete and often misleading measure of progress in a motor learning context. It favors students who arrive with existing advantages such as athletic background, body awareness, prior movement training, and diminishes students who may very well be doing the hardest work in the room.
The more complete picture of progress has layers: tissue adaptation, nervous system regulation, vestibular and cardiovascular adaptation, motor control, proprioception, pain tolerance, confidence, error tolerance, and comfort raising questions and concerns.6 These adaptations are happening in every student, at every level, whether or not a single skill was acquired. A beginner who leaves having worked intentionally on body awareness and simple foundations has had a productive class. A beginner who blazed through five skills has not developed significantly more physiological adaptation than their peer, and is likely to consolidate less.7
Progress is personal. Every student has a reference frame, and progress happens within it rather than against the student with the most advantages in the room. Supporting the student's belief that they will succeed within their own reference frame has been shown to improve both motor performance and long-term skill retention.8 The teacher's job is to see that progress, name it, and make sure the student sees it too. This has to be stated explicitly, often, and early, because students will typically judge progress by rate of skill acquisition. This is a significant opportunity on the part of the teacher to shift the student's perspective and help them recognize that more is happening than they think.
The Fair Chance Framework seeks to understand why a student leaves or continues. A student who tries aerial, gets great support, and still discovers it genuinely isn't for them has had a fair experience. That outcome is acceptable. What is not acceptable is a student leaving because the teaching method, the environment, or the lack of support made the decision for them before they ever had a real chance to find out.
This distinction matters because students rarely identify the teaching as the reason they left. They identify themselves. They leave with a story that physical things aren't for them, that they weren't coordinated enough, they were too slow, that they weren't the type — when in fact, the teaching pushed them too far too fast, or didn't support them reasonably, or pressured them to "keep up." The student's story of inadequacy can last a lifetime, while the teacher remains unaware that their methods were the problem. For this reason, exit surveys are recommended. The goal is not to retain every student, but to understand why they left. The data will sometimes reflect on the teaching directly. Sometimes it won't. The team can determine whether the student was justified and accurate in their assessments and interpretations (Fair Chance Framework does not assume the student is universally correct). But without it, the teacher has no way to identify patterns that reveal gaps in the instruction.
